Zühre Ninem
"Since the day I opened my eyes to this world, it has been war, always war, the endless war. Why would Abe let so many mothers' and fathers' little lambs enter the black soil before they can get enough of their youth, huh?" He snatched the letter from my mother's hand. My uncle called out to her as if he were inside the square of the paper: "Your mother hasn't given up hope, my Mustafa! For the sake of the prayers I say day and night, God will protect you. Don't worry!"
My Grandmother Zühre tells the story of the people of Rumelia whose lives were torn apart during a turbulent period that began with the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War, known as the "Great Defeat", continued with the Balkan and First World Wars, and concluded with the War of Independence. The Great Defeat dragged Grandmother Zühre from her birthplace, Vraça, to Köprülü. This drift continues from here to there in the shrinking Ottoman geography with the ongoing wars, all the way to the inner parts of Anatolia.
