Philosopher and robotics engineer Riccardo Manzotti argues that this dominant "internalist" view places humans in a privileged position, separating them from the rest of nature and alienating them from the world. According to him, consciousness or conscious experience is a part of, or even the natural, physical world itself, rather than a special and mysterious phenomenon that "appears" in our heads, independently of the world. When I see an apple, says Manzotti, I am that apple itself.
