A Wave in the Mind

Granite people, Native American uncles, dictionary aunts; libraries, real Earthsea islands; Tolstoy, Borges, Dickens, Twain; Lord of the Rings; fairy tales, gender, feet, beauty, death, unquestioned assumptions... But most of all, dreaming: “We all need to learn to invent, make, imagine our lives. We need to be taught these skills; You need guides to show you how to do this. If we don't do this, others will make our lives for us." Two themes that we are familiar with from Le Guin's other writings stand out: Process and rhythm – being a woman, being old, being a reader, being a writer; and the tempo and words that the author can only follow, let alone dominate, those stories that make you feel like you can reach dozens of them hanging in the air if you reach out when the time comes. Reading A Wave in the Mind is like sitting down and chatting with an old friend: While it is mind-expanding, it has something that makes you feel comfortable; While you are jumping from branch to branch with enthusiasm, you do not even realize how the hours pass by.
