Noise of Time
Both the composer named Leonard Verity, the hero of the story titled "Sound Confusion" in his first story book, Beyond the Mans, and the story titled "Silence" in his next story collection, The Lemon Table, The protagonist, Finnish musician Jean Sibelius, can be considered as a sign that Julian Barnes gives a prominent place to the art of music in his works in terms of the "problem of artistry". The main theme of all these works is whether the artist pays the price for his art in life, whether the same works can be given by choosing a different life path, and whether the judgment of the future means anything to the artist in real terms.
Julian Barnes this time. appears before us with a narrative about the turbulent life and art of the famous Russian composer Dimitri Sostakovich: In his novel titled The Noise of Time, his innovative works were severely attacked under the oppressive pressure of the Soviet Russia period regime, he secretly defended his understanding of art against ideological bigotry, but the Fifth Symphony It deals with the life and art of Sostakovich, who had to make apparent "compromises" with the regime from time to time, as can be seen in the echoes evoked by Sostakovich, a life and art of intense internal questioning. While Barnes built the text on a "triple" division ("On the Landing", "On the Plane" and "In the Car"), he also created the three main figures of the narrative by establishing a "triple" structure ("The Listener", "The Rememberer" and "The Drinker") . With the Russian proverbs used as leitmotifs, the composer's obsession with the "leap year", his understanding of fate that can be both farce and tragedy, his mother and the women in his life, various funny musician anecdotes, the image of the "Great Leader" Stalin, who constantly called him to the "right" path of folk art. The text, which is woven with many other striking elements, offers the reader a unique reading experience. So let's ask ourselves Dmitri Sostakovich's observation once again: "Is Art really the whisper of History heard above the noise of Time?" If so, "What can be done against the noise of time?"
