Captain's Daughter
YKY presents Pushkin's most important work after Yevgeni Onegin, The Captain's Daughter, in Turkish by Sabahattin Ali and Erol Güney: Pyotr Andreyiç Grinyov, a young nobleman who joined the army in 18th Century Russia, at a time when the regime was turbulent and uncertain. In the background of the love between him and the provincial Masa, there is the "Pugachev Uprising" that left its mark on the years in question. "The Captain's Daughter", which was first published in 1944 by the Maarif Printing House affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, was the tenth book of the "Russian Classics" of the Translation Office, which aimed to bring important works of world literature into Turkish. I met Sabahattin Ali in the early 1940s in Ankara, at the Translation Office of the Ministry of National Education. He was one of the translators of this office. He was also responsible for selecting the classics that needed to be translated into Turkish and correcting the translations. [...] I witnessed how patient he was while we were translating Pushkin's novel The Captain's Daughter together. He would research patiently and carefully for hours to give the exact meaning and pronunciation characteristics of a Russian word in Turkish. -Erol Güney-
