In this latest work, Ellen Meiksins Wood reinterprets the history of political theory. It examines the Western tradition from the perspective of social history, from classical antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. This work is very different not only from the standardized history of abstract ideas, but also from other works that use the framework of historical context. Wood treats the classical thinkers, who are almost sacred, as people who are passionately devoted to their cause. It examines their thoughts in the context of their political language, as well as their creative responses and solution suggestions to the problems and contradictions of the social conditions in which they live. By focusing on the unique property-state relationship in Western history, it reveals how this shaped dominant ideas. It also explores how tripartite interaction with property owners, laborers, and states influenced Western political theory and practice. From the brilliant thinkers of the ancient Greek period, Plato, Aristotle, Aeschylus and Sophocles, to Cicero of the Roman Republic, to Paulus of Tarsus and Augustine of Hippo of the imperial period, we move on to the medieval world: Ibn Rushd, Thomas Aquinas, Padua. The thoughts of Marsilio and William of Occam are examined comparatively with both their contemporaries and predecessors.
From Citizens to Lords is a work in which thinkers who made permanent contributions to the history of world thought are discussed in the context of the social conditions they lived in and examined with original sources and striking analyses.
“Wood covers a wide range of ancient and medieval thinkers with wonderful insight.”
-Paul Cartledge, professor of Greek history at Cambridge University-
“A thought-provoking analysis that successfully combines theory with historical change.”
-Sheldon S. Wolin, professor emeritus of political theory at Princeton University-
