Yüreğim Dağlardadır
My Heart is in the Mountains, written by William Saroyan in 1938 and staged on Broadway the same year, is a play far ahead of its time. This one-act text, which is about the encounter of a starving poet and his son with an old Shakespearean actor named Mac Gregor, who feels lost and disconnected from the world in Fresno in 1914, was considered surrealist, like many of Saroyan's stories. Many critics found the play experimental, comparing it to more traditional and realistic texts of the period, and therefore refrained from giving it an in-depth reading, but did not refrain from applauding it. Saroyan, who deals with topics such as foreignness, homesickness, longing and belonging through the story of Mac Gregor, who has been away from his hometown at the center of the story and whose heart is left in the mountains of Scotland with an Armenian family, not only makes the reader think about these with his powerful pen, but also brings to the surface the longing for a place that only the heart knows. It causes. And perhaps that's why, as many critics have mentioned in their articles, the audience who watched this play on Broadway in the 1938-1939 season left the theater crying without fully understanding why. With the success of this first play, the doors of Broadway were opened wide for him, and Saroyan became the groundbreaking name of the new American theatre.
