Birth of the Greek Nation
Greeks are both Turkey's close neighbors in the West and an important part of its history. The Greeks first formed an effective social power within the Ottoman Empire, and then accelerated the disintegration of the state with the Greek Revolution. The modern Turkish state was also founded by fighting "against Greece". However, Turkish historiography could not, or perhaps did not want to, look at Greece and the Greeks objectively, and as a result, Turkey could not recognize its neighbor. The events related to Greece, which have been repeated to this day within a nationalist discourse that cannot go beyond official historiography, have created new gaps in the consciousness of history and recent history in Turkey. Herkül Millas is an expert outside the so-called historiography that portrays history as a struggle between "us and them" in both Turkey and Greece.
