Paul Ricoeur, one of the most important philosophers of our age, particularly emphasizes that this work, which deals with Freud's new understanding of "human", is a book of philosophy, not psychology. The author states that "we cannot limit Freud to the discovery of what is least human in humans; on the contrary, psychoanalysis as a cultural interpretation is in conflict with all kinds of wholesale interpretations of human phenomena" and questions the Freudian discourse in various aspects: what does "interpret" mean in psychoanalysis, does this interpretation mean "self"? Does the Freudian interpretation of culture exclude all other interpretations? Discussing areas such as self, justice, love, morality, knowledge, time, language, and belief, On Interpretation offers thought material to psychoanalysis and philosophy enthusiasts as well as to readers seeking the question "what am I?" ABOUT THE AUTHOR (1913-2005) French philosopher, historian. He was introduced to the phenomenology of Husserl and Gabriel Marcel. He was accused of spying by the German government during World War II and was imprisoned in 1940. He spent the war years in the Poméranie prison camp. After gaining his freedom, Ricoeur examined various interpretation theories in linguistics and psychoanalysis from the perspective of phenomenology and defined the symbols of human will, freedom and evil. He taught at world-famous universities such as Sorbonne, Louvain, Yale and Chicago. At Nanterre, which became one of the universities where student movements were most influential, Ricoeur became the target of the radical left due to his famous quote "the garbage dumps of history". He resigned from his position at the university in 1970. Ricoeur gave a conference titled "Moral Autonomy and Existential Fragility" in Ankara in 2001. He was one of the participants of the forum on peace organized by the Universal Culture Academy in 2002.
