  • The most important cultural boundary that Yazidis draw between themselves and the majority community is the boundary they set through marriage. And those who maintain the existence of this border are the women who move between the borders. In other words, women are the passive boundary bearers who mediate the protection of the boundaries between them and the "others". In this sense, as much as the Yazidi community is a male-dominated community, it also depends on women to maintain its existence. They can, to some extent, overcome their divisions by nation-state borders through women by marrying and giving daughters. The way to pass on the Yazidi culture to future generations is to marry a woman from within the group. The fact that the primary actors of transferring culture to new generations are women themselves increases the importance of women, and this also brings about an increase in the pressure and control on them.
