The Birth of the New Ottoman Thought - Collected Works 5
In this book, Şerif Mardin examines the pioneers of modern political ideas among the Turks, the changes in the texture of Turkish society, and how well the traditional Ottoman world view can be integrated with the modern Western view; It tells the story of the formation of the modern intellectual movement in the Ottoman Empire, first through the secret organization known as Alliance-i Hamiyyet, and then under the Young Turk flag. According to Mardin, what made it difficult for the Neo-Ottomans to achieve synthesis between Islamic concepts and the thoughts of the Enlightenment was the political developments of the period, rather than the secular element in the enlightenment ideology.
