On Old Age
Back Cover Text (From the Promotional Bulletin)
After the assassination of Caesar in 44 BC, Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero left his state affairs aside and retired to his villa in Tusculum. The grief he felt over the loss of his daughter Tullia in 45 BC also played a major role in this seclusion. During this period of crisis, when he tried to calm the storms in his soul by moving away from the political and social concerns of Rome, he found solace in philosophy and set out to rebuild Greek philosophy in Rome with the works he wrote one after the other. This work, which he named On Old Age and dedicated to his friend Atticus, is the product of these productive years he spent in Tusculum, which were considered the last days of his life.
In this work, which can also be considered as a consolation for old age and death, Cicero makes Cato the Elder, one of the leading figures of Rome, the chief speaker and tries to explain his views conveyed in his language with examples he chose from Greek and Roman history. The views he puts forward in the work are a summary of the moral teachings of Greek philosophy and its ideas about old age. Thus, he had the opportunity to compare the Greek philosophy, which he had studied since his youth, and the views of all Greek philosophical schools, from Plato's Academy to Epicureanism, with his own understanding of life and express them in his own unique style.
