Although Old Age seems to be based on thirty-five-year-old Emilio's passion for the beautiful Angiolina, reaching the level of obsession, the author actually gradually describes the "strong" male profile of his period through the character of Emilio. We witness that it collapsed.

XX. Italo Svevo, one of the important writers of the 21st century literature, in his major works such as Here is Life and Zeno's Consciousness, as well as in Old Age; He reflected the threshold of the century he lived in, his complex inner world and the crises he experienced, as well as the people of his time, with his unique ability of meticulous observation and subtle psychological descriptions.

The fiction, as in every work bearing Svevo's signature, is knotted at two points, beyond immediate events; First, Emilio is from the same cloth as Alfonso and Zeno, the main characters of the other two novels. He is a pedestrian in the fight for life, a helpless person even in the face of his own passion, an incompetent, "incompetent person"; the other is life, with all its strangeness, all its "originality", life itself, Svevo's lifelong passion for youth, in Schopenhauer's words, "a pendulum oscillating between boredom and pain."
