Cato the Elder, or On Old Age
Cicero (106 BC–43 BC): Great Roman statesman, orator and thinker. He studied philosophy and law in his youth. He rose to the rank of consul with his mastery in the art of oratory. He managed to influence people of all ages with his speeches and philosophical and technical works that dealt with Rome in the triangle of individual, traditional social order and state. Cicero was 62 years old when he wrote Cato the Elder, or On Old Age, which he wrote a year before his death. He structured his work in the form of a dialogue, taking Plato as an example, and chose Marcus Porcius Cato, known as the Great Sage in Latin literature, as the main speaker. Cicero, in the person of Cato, expresses his views that old age is a natural stage of human life, like childhood, youth and maturity, and that this age should not be seen as a burden.
