Yaşam ve Ölüm Yorgunu
Mo Yan's epic novel, Life and Death Are Weary, begins on January 1, 1950, some two years after Mao Zedong's land reform movement overturned the traditional order of rural China. During these two years, Yama, the Lord of Hell, tortures Ximen Nao, who is notorious for his kindness to his laborers, in order to make him confess why the peasants, who have just seized power, have executed him. But when Ximen Nao continues to claim innocence even after serving his sentence of being burned in hellfire, the Lord of Hell Yama gives in and allows him to return to his former land.
However, when Ximen Nao is reincarnated, he realizes that he was not born as a human but as a donkey. Because the Lord of Hell Yama does not want the souls whose hearts are filled with hatred to be reborn as humans, he sends those souls back to the world as animals. The five chapters of the novel tell the story of our hero's six reincarnations as a donkey, bull, pig, dog and monkey, witnessing the fate of his former family, friends, rivals and enemies. In his last reincarnation, Ximen Nao is born as a big-headed boy with an astonishing memory power and the ability to learn languages. The novel tells the story of the last fifty years of China's turbulent history from the perspectives of these different identities.
