Yamaç-İletişim Klasikleri
Goncharov, the creator of the immortal Oblomov character, depicts the 19th century Russian society in detail in his latest novel, Yamaç.
Rayski escapes from the city life in Petersburg and goes to Malinovka, where his family farm is located on the banks of the Volga. Rayski, who defines himself as an artist, is interested in painting, music and literature, but this interest always remains superficial, just like in his private life. His interest first in Sofiya Belovodova and then in her cousins Marfenka and Vera does not deepen either, even though he competes with the nihilist Volohov and their neighbor Tushin for Vera. Goncharov changed the characters and focus of the novel over time in the light of social developments in Yamaç, which he worked on for twenty years. He criticizes nihilism with the character Volohov, and he criticizes the Russian artists of the period with his character Rayski, who provides the integrity of the novel.
“In addition to a climate full of tension, excitement and dramatic encounters not seen in his previous works, Goncharov displays an unprecedented mastery in the complexity of the plot in Yamaç.”
