Wapshot Records
"John Cheever is a magical realist. The style in his dazzling stories and unique novels is rich and original, as in all other important writers of post-war American literature."
-Philip Roth-
Inspired by Cheever's early youth in New England, Wapshot Records was recorded in the small fishing town of St. It focuses on the Wapshot family living in Botolphs. Venerable captain Leander Wapshot, who sees himself as the head of the family and the ruler of the seas, his determined and uncompromising wife Sarah, his libertine elder son Moses, the adventurous younger brother Coverly and their daring, eccentric aunt Honora...
In Cheever's world, which focuses on the duality in the human soul and the incompatibility between the personas the characters present to society and their inner decay, the longing for a lost past is like a thin and unabated you. With these both funny and tragic stories, the members of the Wapshot family seem to have vowed to struggle with life and never lose their passion for life, even if they are sometimes defeated.
Known as the 'Chekhov of the American suburbs', Cheever had already established a reputation as a writer of great stories in 1957, when his first novel, Wapshot Records, was published. When the book won the National Book Award in 1958, it was proven that he was a master novelist. Cheever, who was awarded the Pulitzer and National Book Critics Circle awards in 1979, is considered one of the most important storytellers of the 20th century.
"Many people have written about suburbia, but only Cheever has created an archetype out of it."
-John Updike-
