Cherry Orchard
In Russia, serfdom was abolished in the mid-19th century and the bourgeoisie began to rise. The Cherry Orchard is a touching portrait of an aristocratic family unable to face the reality of the changing social, political and economic order in the country. The family farm, which includes a large cherry orchard, is about to be sold due to debts. Cherry orchards are now a thing of the past, along with the childhood memories of the farm owners. They are incapable of acting decisively and keeping their property in the face of the new order. The Cherry Orchard was staged by Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theater in 1904. Although Chekhov emphasized that his work was a "comedy and even a farce", Stanislavski insisted on treating the play as a "tragedy". Although Stanislavski was famous for bringing a natural and unpretentious expression to the hitherto overly emotional Russian theater, he could not achieve the simplicity and naturalness that Chekhov wanted for his own plays.
