Vatan Yahut Silistre-Türk Edebiyatı Klasikleri 6
For Namık Kemal, theater is a very important genre in terms of being able to reach the public directly. In the play Vatan yahut Silistre, he wants to instill the idea and love of the homeland in the public by clashing the love of the homeland with various emotions and finally making it superior to all of them. The newly beginning love between Zekiye and İslam Bey during the years of the Crimean War takes an unexpected turn when İslam Bey goes to the front. Zekiye joins the defense of Silistre disguised as a man after İslam Bey and thus events take place on the battlefield where love, love of the homeland and the idea of the nation intertwine. When Vatan yahut Silistre was first staged on April 1, 1873, it created great enthusiasm among the public, leading to demonstrations, and as another result of this effect, Namık Kemal's newspaper İbret was closed down and he was exiled to Famagusta. The work, which was translated into Russian and German while the author was alive, was later published in many languages.
