Varto

Varto traces an adventure that started in 1915 and continues until today. During the dark, disaster-filled days of the First World War, in a village in eastern Anatolia, the paths of two siblings, Maryam and Varto, a girl and a boy, cross with a young man they have never met before, Hasan. The families of the two brothers have been sent on a death march called "deportation", and Hasan's sick father, who is about to take his last breath, asks his son, in the name of humanity, to deliver Maryam and Varto to a place where they can be safe. Hasan, who cannot make any sense of his father making such a harsh demand in the days when Armenians' property was plundered and their lives were worth not a penny, will fluctuate between feelings of anger and compassion during this dangerous journey he reluctantly embarks on. Maryam and Varto, who have no choice but to hand over the reins of their lives to Hasan, thrown by major developments beyond their control, will look for ways to both survive and reunite with their loved ones during this uncanny adventure that will transform both themselves and Hasan.
