Üzerinde Güneş Batmayan Katliam
During the last quarter of the Victorian era, massive droughts repeatedly devastated agriculture throughout the tropics and also in northern China. Droughts and epidemics claimed the lives of more than 50 million people in poor rural areas. As once-lush lands turned into bleak deserts, death rates suggestive of a nuclear holocaust emerged in parts of Ethiopia, China and Brazil. Although it caused a human tragedy on a scale not seen since the great plague epidemic, the history of this disaster and its long-lasting effects on the world's economic development are only now being examined from a holistic perspective. Mike Davis also tells us the great detective story of the century-long hunt of scientists who pursued the "monsoon mystery" and discovered the fingerprints of "El Nino / Southern Oscillation" in the disasters that destroyed agricultural crops in the 1870s and 1890s. However, mother nature can rarely inflict such a massacre on her own. El Nino also had accomplices: the gold standard and the New Imperialism. The outlines of the future "third world", that is, the irreparable division of humanity into haves and have-nots, were drawn in the twilight of the nineteenth century by the fatal interactions between climate and world economy.
"... our endeavor is not to look at the 'lands of hunger' forgotten in the still waters of world history, but to consider how the labor and products of the people of the tropical zone were forcibly incorporated into the London-centered world economy within a certain time period (1870-1914). Millions died not outside the borders of the 'modern world system', but within the very process of their forcible inclusion into the economic and political structures of this system, in the golden age of liberal capitalism, as the 'order of God' of the 'sacred' principles of Smith, Bentham and Mill. "They were massacred by the implementation of this form."
