Distant Star
Distant Star Book Description
Far from the Wieder airstrip, It appeared in one of the slums of Santiago. He wrote his first verse there: Death is friendship. Then he flew over some railway warehouses and places that looked like abandoned factories, but where people were dragging cardboard through the streets, children were climbing the fences separating the houses, and dogs were visible. To the left, at nine o'clock, he noticed two vast mushroom-like settlements, separated by the railway. He wrote the second verse: Death is Chile.
Is Carlos Wieder an artist? Pilot? Torturer? Murderer? Or all at once? When the story of Carlos Wieder, who was an obscure poet during the Allende government and rose to stardom during the General Pinochet dictatorship and emerged as an "artist" who gave no right to anything other than aesthetics, is intertwined with the recent history of Chile, one of the most original narratives of South America is born. p>
The Distant Star, one of the basic components of Roberto Bolaño's oeuvre, is a sarcastic portrait of a generation forced to choose between torture, exile and death.
