Uzak Tepeler
In his first novel, Distant Hills, the British writer of Japanese origin, Ishiguro, describes the destructive effects of great social transformations on individuals, the sense of duty and freedom. Keiko, the elder daughter of Etsuko, an old Japanese woman living alone in England, commits suicide. Soon Etsuko's little daughter Niki comes to visit her mother, but the emotional distance between mother and daughter increases as Etsuko becomes engulfed in her memories. Etsuko, who lived in Nagasaki with her first husband after the end of World War II, remembers the friendship she formed with her neighbor Sachiko and her little daughter Mariko during those years. In order to explain some facts about today, there is a need to review this period of the past.
