Uyku
"Everyone sleeps. Sleep connects the past and the present. Sleep digests and heals wounds. Sleep equalizes the rich and the poor, men and women, humans and animals. Everyone but me."
In this first novel, Belgian author Annelies Verbeke tells the story of Maya, who suffers from insomnia, and her soulmate Benoit, whom she meets in the night. At first, Maya tries to sleep with hot milk with honey, relaxation therapy and various similar methods suggested by her relatives, but she is not successful. After parting ways with her lover Remco, who cannot understand her and continues to sleep next to her, her life changes and she begins to feel even more alone. Maya wanders the streets at night, when most people spend their homes sleeping in their beds. About Benoit, whom he met on one of these trips, who does not sleep like him, he thinks, "I can only get along with an insomniac, because others do not understand me." The novel gains a different and deeper dimension with the stories told by the two heroes. Both insomniacs are left out of the regular life led by the majority of people who sleep at night and work during the day, even though they do not prefer to do so, and at that point they fall side by side.
Verbeke's characters are people with whom we cannot help but sympathize, who suffer because of their longing to live a normal life, and who are aware that those longings and expectations and the superficial life outside will not satisfy them. The author strengthens the basis of his story with accurate, powerful metaphors. Sleep is a deeply insightful look at life and the experiences that life offers to people, from an author who wants to impress people, make them laugh, and bring them closer to each other... A genuine solidarity initiative, both concise and poetic, spiced with a pinch of irony...
