Shame

A political novel, Shame. Politicians caught up in a frenzy of power, ambitious, "devout" generals who have appointed themselves guardians of a society they see as immature, unresponsive crowds, a country whose democracy is being collectively torn apart... Rushdie describes this country with great irony and deep sadness - and achieves this by creating an allegory full of rich characters that does not resort to the clichéd solutions frequently resorted to in political novels.

This extraordinary novel, in which characters "both similar and dissimilar" to Zia-ul-Haq and two to the father and daughter Bhuttos, play important roles, attempts to tell the history of a country "that resembles but cannot quite be called Pakistan" through the prism of the feeling of shame. This "shame", which carries a richness of meaning including shame, disgrace and scandal, is especially embodied in two characters: Ömer Hayyam Şakil, the personification of shamelessness, and his wife Safiye Zeynep, who experiences all the shame that other people do not feel in her soul...
