Underground
Underground, or A Hero of Our Time, is one of the most important works of contemporary Russian fiction. One of Vladimir Makanin's most praised works, this novel continues the tradition of the heroic age created by classic Russian writers such as Pushkin, Lermontov, Tolstoy, and Dostoyevsky. The novel's protagonist is Petrovich, who can be called a homeless philosopher; he works as a watchman, has written books that were rejected by publishers, and his painter brother has been committed to a mental hospital. With his unique narrative, Makanin creates a new contemporary hero out of him who lives in the worlds of Dostoyevsky's Notes from the Underground and Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time.
