Three Years
Three Years is one of Chekhov's works that enabled him to be accepted as the heir of the great masters of Russian literature and as a strong writer. In this novella, the author discusses the institution of marriage. The effect of time transforming and sometimes "healing" emotions in marriage; It points out that experiences shared over the years and disasters faced together can lead to mature love emerging on the horizon of even marriages that started "without love". A Moscow merchant proposes marriage to young Yulia, whom he meets in the countryside and falls in love with at first sight. Although the young girl initially rejects this unattractive man, she agrees to marry him out of fear that there will be no other groom candidate. However, this one-sided love will lead the couple, who started their new life in Moscow after the wedding, into unbearable pain. Three Years is also a touching panorama of life in Moscow before the revolution, with its human relations, all its struggles and disappointments.
