Three Sisters
His contemporary, the playwright Sergey Naidyonov, wrote about Three Sisters in a letter to Chekhov: "After watching the play, I suddenly felt the desire to live, to write, to work harder... whereas the play was full of pain and sorrow. It was strange, optimistic... soothing." angle."
In Three Sisters, Chekhov tells the story of the aristocratic Prozorov family, who are trying to come to terms with the decline of the privileged classes in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Three sisters raised in Moscow; Olga, Masha and Irina have been living in a small provincial town for eleven years. Their hopes of returning to Moscow, which symbolizes their dreams of a life more suitable to their refined tastes and sensibilities, are in poignant contrast with real life, which flows relentlessly.
The Three Sisters, staged by the Moscow Art Theater in 1901, a year after its writing, is one of the milestones of modern theatre.
