Türkiye'de Laiklik ve İslam
Rather than being a worldly secular worldview, Kemalist secularism is an ideology that aims to reshape religion by the state. For this purpose, the Islamic discourse on which it is based is based on the opposition of a 'reactionary Islam' (reactionary) that is political, bigoted, based on superstitions and influenced by foreign (Arab) culture, against a private, enlightened, rational and national 'Turkish Islam'. Conceptualizing Islam on the basis of such an opposition points to an important continuity in terms of the ideology of secularism between the early Republic and multi-party democracy periods in Turkey. However, the end of single-party rule marks the beginning of a new era in which important discursive transformations regarding secularism are experienced.
It is said that one of the axes of cultural conflict in Turkish society stems from the conflict over the issue of secularism. The boundaries of secularism, or more precisely, the process of secularization (the state may be secular, or secularism is the subject of the private sphere, it is personal), also determine the subjects of this conflict. Of course, these discussions are not only about the meaning of secularism; concepts of state, society, modernity/modernization and
may expand to the role of religion in the public sphere.
The book in your hand follows the relationship between secularism and secularization processes in Turkey and Islam through cases such as the Menemen Incident and the Malatya Incident, as well as discussions about Turkish adhan, Alevism and Said Nursi, by also focusing on the newspapers and magazines of the period.
It reveals in detail the starting points and, more importantly, the social and political consequences of a debate that continues in Turkey and is a "fault line".
