This book is an interpretation of history, or in other words, a study of history that aims to elucidate some macro-sociological questions through the analysis of a certain social formation. Turkish history provides ample material for such a study. The Ottoman Empire declined in the process of integration with capitalism and disintegrated as a result of the success of various nationalist secession movements. Integration with capitalism gave rise to a bourgeois class rivaling the traditional bureaucracy. While the empire was disintegrating, it was the bureaucracy, not the bourgeoisie, that set out to establish a new nation state and modernize this state. Although the bureaucracy dominated the new state, the developing bourgeoisie increasingly threatened the authoritarian regime. In terms of economic policy, the bureaucracy was identified with the statism of the interwar period. Immediately after World War II, it was seen that liberalism emerged under American hegemony and the bourgeoisie's own party came to power. Industrialization based on import substitution implemented in the 1960s and 1970s led to the dominance of capitalist relations over time and the formation of a capitalist state. In his book, Çağlar Keyder explains this process, how capitalist development was shaped within the framework of the specifics of the country's history, how the Ottoman state and social legacy created the class balances of the Republic in indirect and complex ways, and examines the periods of the process and the structural balances and contradictions of each period.
