Strange Library
A fairytale-like story written for adults by Haruki Murakami...
I picked up the book called Diary of an Ottoman Tax Collector and started reading. It was a difficult book written in Ottoman language. However, strangely enough, I could read it without any difficulty. As I turned the pages of the book, I had become the Turkish tax collector Ibn Armut Hasir, set out to collect taxes in Istanbul with a crooked scimitar at my waist. The smells of fruit and chicken, cigarettes and coffee spread out onto the street like a slowly flowing river. Street vendors selling dates and tangerines were shouting loudly on the side of the road.
A lonely boy, a mysterious girl and the Sheep Man... Will they be able to escape from the terrifying library where the scary old man has imprisoned them? A fairytale-like story written for grown-ups by Haruki Murakami… Why did these things have to happen to me? All I did was go to the library to borrow a book. "Don't be so upset," said the Sheep Man, trying to console me. "Look, Sheep Man," I said. "Why does that old man want to eat my brain?" "Because a brain full of knowledge would be very delicious. It's so soft. It's also very lumpy."
