Debates on the transition to capitalism, underdevelopment and imperialism had determined the agenda of social sciences in Turkey for a long time. These discussions were aimed at understanding where we came from and where we were going, state-society relations, and the nature of political alliances. While seeking answers to these questions, Çağlar Keyder's articles collected under the title of Social History Studies deal with the establishment of the capitalist world system since the 16th century, the French and British models that are the products of different histories and cultures, the Ottoman Empire and the problems of change/modernization/development. Taken together with the articles investigating the structural transformation that occurred in the agricultural sector in the period from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, the entire book reminds us of what methodological and conceptual tools are needed in academic and political discussions. It draws a rich framework for examining the political, economic and social processes inherited by the Republic in the context of world history.
