Toplu Hikayeler
Joseph Roth, whom we know with his novels Job and Radetzky March, is one of the most contradictory writers of the 20th century. He was an anti-war and war volunteer, a socialist, but a passionate supporter of the collapsed Habsburg Monarchy. Roth, who fascinates the reader with his superior observation skills, creates unforgettable characters from the sad-hearted smugglers, prostitutes, postmen and teachers he tells in his stories.
The chronological order of these stories, which he wrote between 1916 and 1938, starting with one of his first works, The Exemplary Student, continuing with The Legend of the Saint Drunkard, and ending with the fairy-tale novella Livyatan, about the coral merchant Nissen Pikzenik, gives the reader a detailed picture of the author's literary development.
“If history could choose a style, it would certainly be Roth's.”
–Michael Hofmann
“There is a poem on every page.”
–Joseph Brodsky
