Ahtamar Church - Walls Alive with Light Book Description

Rising on a small island in Lake Van, in a position that can be seen even from afar, Ahtamar Church is a unique example of Eastern-Christian architectural art with its reliefs wrapping its exterior in strips. These reliefs, which are mostly flat, become indistinct inside the wall in hazy weather or in the shade, but come to life in daylight; Thus, the church literally "comes to life" with the sun.

In the research conducted on Aghtamar until now, the architecture and decorations of the church have been handled separately from each other. However, in Aghtamar, architecture and external equipment are an inseparable whole, and it is this integrity that makes the church a “shining” structure. Therefore, the church should be considered as a holistic work of art. The importance of Ahtamar in terms of art history can only be revealed with such a view.

Although Aghtamar Church represents a building type that has been seen before, it is of great importance as it is the only well-preserved example.
