Theogony - Works and Days
Hesiod (c. 8th century BC): The language he used and some characteristic features of his works show that Hesiod, about whom we have very little information about his life, was of Aeolian and Ionian origin. Theogony, one of the two important works proven to belong to the great poet, is an epic work that deals with the issues that established Greek cosmology, such as the creation of the universe, the birth of the gods, the lineages of gods and divine beings, and major Greek legends. In Works and Days, which is considered the first example of Greek didactic poetry, the poet touches the human experience by telling the "truth" of concepts such as justice, virtue, work, generosity, right, law, order and truth; provides functional information on agriculture and maritime affairs; Lists the lucky and unlucky days of the month. These wise advice will not be foreign to the Anatolian people, because the speaker is not only Hesiod, but also the Mediterranean people. Hasan Âli Yücel Classics Series brings together the most valuable translation of these two works with the reader again, accompanied by a review and dictionary titled "Hesiod's Work and Sources" prepared by Azra Erhat.
