Cesare Pavese, one of the most important names of Italian literature, was a young writer who focused on contemporary world problems and the fate of people experiencing these problems in his novels and poems. Pavese, who committed suicide in 1950 when he was forty-two years old, wrote "The House on the Hill" in the last years of his life. Near the end of the Second World War, during the civil war against the fascists, teacher Corrado, who escaped from the city and went far away to the places where he spent his childhood, encounters a woman with whom he had a short-term relationship in the past. While escaping from the harsh reality of the time he lives in and an uncertain future, he is deeply affected by the cruelty and meaninglessness of the war. "If the war ends one day," he says, "we must ask ourselves: What will we do with those who died? Why did they die?"
