Paul Lafargue (1842-1911): French Marxist, economist, journalist, writer. He studied medicine, met Marx and Engels in London, and joined the First International. In 1868 he married Karl Marx's daughter, Laura. He took an active part in the Paris Commune. He became one of the most influential leaders of the French Workers' Party, which he founded together with Jules Guesde. The Right to Lazy, which he wrote in a sharp, sometimes ironic language, was first serialized in the weekly magazine Égalité in 1880, and was republished in 1883 with a few notes he added while he was in prison. In The Right to Laziness, Lafargue harshly criticizes not only capitalism but also the proletariat, which he says is seduced by the dogma of work. He regards forced labor as the cause of all kinds of intellectual degeneration and organic degradation in capitalist society. Lafargue, who was remembered by Lenin as one of the most talented ideologues of Marxism, committed suicide together with his wife Laura Marx in 1911 in order to avoid the devastation that old age would cause on the mind and body.
