Tehlikeli İlişkiler-Ciltli
The French Revolution was only years away when Choderlos de Laclos published her first and only novel. (Marie-Antoinette immediately ordered the book, but asked that the author’s name and the book’s name be removed from the cover.)
The intriguing story of Dangerous Liaisons hinges on the unholy alliance of its two characters, the Marquise and the Viscount. Its undercurrent of the male-dominated society’s enslavement of women caused an immediate scandal.
When Baudelaire’s notes for the book were published in 1903, the book began to “burn as ice can burn.” The surrealists thought they had found a new Sade in Laclos; for Malraux, Dangerous Liaisons was “the eroticization of the will.” Virginia Woolf and Aldous Huxley praised the book on behalf of English literature. After Freud showed that the human soul was composed of endless abysses, the book was a classic.
Who knows, if Laclos's wish to become a military attaché to Turkey had come true, perhaps he would have written a second novel.
