Could the stone master have foreseen that so much eye-light, so much labor, and the perfect balance of beauty would be pushed aside before even a century had passed?.. That the cemetery would be plundered! I could not accept the rude indifference that led to this happening. In these stones were engraved the hurtful history of a city, its destructive self-interest, the past and present of a city that had been destroyed over the course of a century, down to its cemeteries and erected concrete towers on top of the ruins... This is how I started writing the story of the stonemason Halim... "
