- With Philip G. Kreyenbroek
- Until twenty or thirty years ago, what attracted many Westerners to Yazidism lay mainly in the mystery it represented. Travelers of the 19th century were very curious to investigate a community that allegedly worshiped Satan, but whose members were very clean and decent and did not display any distinguishing features that would deserve this evil adjective. When the accounts of these travelers were published in the West, scholars became interested in this community, seeking clues to unravel the unknown mysteries of the past and perhaps with the desire to obtain more information in the form of religious texts. However, the Yazidis were notorious for adhering to secrecy, especially when it came to their sacred texts. That is why, for twenty or thirty years, Western academics' demand for information has not been met with a suitable information supply. The breakthrough finally came in the late 19th century, when two written texts believed to be the "Holy Books" of the Yazidis emerged. However, soon the accuracy of these sources began to be doubted and it was claimed that the Yazidis had no written texts of any importance. As a result, Western scholars' interest in Yazidism began to fade in the 1920s and 1930s. More than half a century later, some truly sacred hymns of this community became known in the West. This recognition led to the realization that, in reality, these religious compilations had existed extensively by word of mouth, but were carefully kept secret. The work of Philip G. Kreyenbroek and Xelîl Cindî Reşow opens the door to this mysterious sacred knowledge, and the book includes sacred poems and religious narratives from the Yazidi history with their Kurdish originals and Turkish translations.
