February of My Life
Garbis Cancikyan was a poet who changed the direction of Armenian literature with a handful of poems squeezed into a short life and left deep traces on those who came after him. At an age that could be considered a child, he was afflicted with a delicate disease, which was seen as the fate of poets in the past, and under the difficult conditions of the 1940s, he pursued poetry, writing, and literature, without ever taking off his shoulders the troubles of school, work, home, and living. While it was normal for someone who had a deep pain in his heart to leave the world without living it to the fullest to pray and lament, he faced death with fortitude, without any whining. Comparing his own end to a sunset, he wrote into verse with a subtle expression how he abandoned his dreams and hopes and faded away in the turmoil of his inner world, thus making the "February of his life" eternal. In addition to Cancikyan's poems, which have been virtually recreated in Turkish with Ohannes Saskal's masterful translation, the book also includes his prose and what his pen friends wrote about him. 'February of My Life' is for those who want to meet the rare and valuable literary accumulation of a poet who has passed away, and to witness a life in love with writing that lasted only 26 years.
