Step and Steppe presents a critical evaluation of the literary works that were involved in the establishment of the Russian and Turkish novel tradition, investigating the attitudes taken against Westernization, the problems clustered around it, and how this entire framework affects the novel traditions. It draws a rich framework of discussion extending from Dostoyevsky to Reşat Nuri, from Gonçarov to Tanpınar. After comparing the choices of the Russian and Ottoman empires against Westernization, the types of intellectuals and writers that these choices revealed, and their translation and publishing activities, Murat Belge turns to the geographical places and the tradition of criticism where literary works in both languages focus. Then, by examining the characters and types in the works, he examines how the lishnii chelovek (superfluous man) type was formed in Russian literature, how it was used in different writers, what kind of instrumentality the "superfluous man" itself carries, and what problems it portrays as a typology. By including the political types in the novels in his evaluation, Murat Belge comprehensively discusses how an issue such as Westernization, which is the cradle of both political and cultural problems, is "expressed" in Russian and Turkish.
