When Stalinism Ruled
"To claim that Putin's Russia (or even Stalin's Russia) is a continuation of the old Russia would be to oversimplify everything. Of course, this is not the case. Both during the Stalin and Putin eras, Russia had completely different ideologies than before. "Their social structures and economies had become a literate and educated society, more or less integrated with world culture, over the course of the 20th century. These changes were truly striking. In this respect, modern Russia or the USSR was the diametric opposite of the old Moscow principality." Ivan the Terrible, Lenin, Stalin or Putin are remembered as actors who left or are making their mark on the period in which they lived. They all had ideologies, positions and ways of governing that made them unique, and in this sense, they became completely different figures corresponding to different periods of history. On the other hand, it is also possible to conceive of history as an expression of continuity, like a rosary waiting for the next stone on its string: In other words, one can talk about an (old) "Moscow" tradition, the traces of an archaic culture... J. Arch Getty has made a huge discovery by scouring Russian archives. In his meticulously prepared work titled When Stalinism Rules, he proposes to discuss both Stalin as a differentiated ideological figure and Stalinism as an ideological formation in itself, not a derivative of Marxism. While discussing Stalinism in this eccentricity, it deals with management practices, transformations within institutional structures, maneuvers and conflicts within the local-central government. When Stalin and his management logic became dominant in Russia, it seeks answers to the questions of whether this event was a repetition of a cultural tradition or a unique "event" without getting stuck in essentialism. By looking from a multifaceted perspective in the light of historical documents, minutes, previous studies and memories of the Stalin period, it offers us an alternative ideology and period analysis that displaces the one-dimensional and single-centered perspectives on Stalin and the historical moment he ruled.
