Amras Watten - A Legacy Book Description

In AMRAS, which Thomas Bernhard has described as his favorite text many times, the illness story of Karl, who studied natural sciences, and Walter, who studied music and was an epileptic like his mother, is told. After the family's suicide attempt, which resulted in the death of their parents, the two surviving brothers begin to live in a tower that is both a prison and a shelter for them. Their uncle brought them to this tower to prevent them from being admitted to a mental hospital.

Watten. An Inheritance is a long monologue centered around a South Tyrolean card game – “watten” – in which the paths of four characters intersect: the doctor whose practice is closed on suspicion of morphine abuse (first-person narrator), the trucker who forces him to play watten, the trucker who forces himself against a tree in the forest. Papermaker Siller, who committed suicide by hanging, and the traveler who found him dead. After Siller's suicide, the doctor says that he will no longer go to play wadten.
