According to Michael Lebowitz, "a good society is one that allows for the full development of human potential." In this short, clear and understandable book, Lebowitz convincingly argues that such a society is possible. How far capitalism is from this concept of a good society can be seen even by a cursory examination of its basic features. In capitalism, what is prioritized is not human development, but profits appropriated by a small minority of the population. When there is a conflict between profit and human development, profit takes priority. If you ask the unemployed, those struggling in temporary jobs, the sick and disabled, the poor and prisoners, they will also say this.
So where should we turn if not to capitalism? Lebowitz builds his understanding of alternative society by making a critical evaluation of the experiences of the Soviet Union and China and the ongoing process in Venezuela. According to him, a good society should have three features: social ownership of the means of production, social production based on workers' control, and meeting communal needs and goals.
