History of Social Psychology, the emergence and rise of this discipline,

It reveals a series of radical social and political developments in the background and with the contributions of many important thinkers. Although the term “social psychology” was first used in the 1860s, the development of ideas surrounding this field has a longer history. Gustav Jahoda traces the history of the discipline over two centuries, connecting early ideas with the present.

While experimental approaches first appeared in France during the Enlightenment, it was the Scots who anticipated some modern ideas. The search for the laws of mind and society began in Europe in the 19th century. Darwinian theory had a strong influence on the emerging discipline, and its center of gravity increasingly shifted to the United States. Social psychology came to maturity in the United States during the interwar period.

In the book, which also includes the history of social sciences, Jahoda concisely conveys many developments that may seem complicated to the reader. This approach also allows reviewing the scientific, cultural and philosophical developments of the period in which people who contributed to the development of the discipline lived. Because the book covers a very remarkable period in terms of the development of science and social science. As Jahoda investigates the beginnings of the field in the modern era, drawing on French, German and Italian sources, the result is a creative monograph that stands out among other psychology histories.
