The Last Girl: The Story of My Captivity and My Fight against ISIS
“This book was written not with ink but with blood. With the author's own blood.”
Zülfü Livaneli
I didn't realize how small my village was until I saw that the whole of Koço fit into the schoolyard. We huddled on the dry grass. Some people were whispering, wondering what was going on. Others were silent; They were shocked. No one could yet comprehend what had happened. From that moment on, every thought that crossed my mind and every step I took was a prayer to God. The militants pointed their guns at us. “Women and children to the second floor,” they shouted. “Let the men stay here.”
Nadia Murad was born and raised in Koço, a small town in Northern Iraq. He belonged to an ordinary Yazidi family who lived by shepherding and farming. He was going to school, working in the fields, and dreaming of becoming a history teacher or opening a hair salon.
On August 15, 2014, when Nadia was only twenty-one years old, her peaceful life suddenly ended. ISIS militants massacred the people living in her village: They killed men and women who were too old to be sex slaves. Nadia's mother and six older brothers were among those killed, and their bodies were thrown into mass graves. Nadia was taken to Mosul and sold in ISIS slave markets along with thousands of Yazidi girls.
She was captured by many militants, repeatedly raped and beaten. He finally narrowly escaped through the streets of Mosul and took refuge with a Sunni Arab family, whose eldest son risked his life to save Nadia.
Nadia's story brought the world's attention to the ongoing genocide. It's much more than a story; It has been a testament to human survival, a serenade to a lost country and a people torn apart by war, a call to action for the entire world, and a beacon of hope for the victims of genocide. The Last Girl was written so that no other girl in the world would experience the same pain.
