The Last Station - Tolstoy's Last Year
Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, the author of magnificent masterpieces such as Anna Karenina and War and Peace, set out by train to an unknown direction on a cold autumn day in 1910, in order to spend the last days of his life in peace. When he ran away from his home, his wife of forty-eight years, his thirteen children and journalists, he took only his loved ones with him. This difficult and troublesome journey ends at Astapovo Station. The Last Station was written based on historical facts, using the diaries and letters of Tolstoy's wife Sofya Andreyevna, his doctor, his children, his companion Chertkov and his secretary Bulgakov. The novel, which looks at the last year of the life of the famous writer, who is waiting for a sad end, through the eyes of these people, with a successful fiction, goes deep into Tolstoy's worldview, ideals, loves and disappointments. It introduces not only 'Tolstoy the writer' but also 'Tolstoy the man' in a pathetic but realistic way.
The Last Station was brought to the big screen with an ambitious production starring Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren.
“An intricate masterpiece.”
