Last Istanbul
If I turned my head, I would see him right behind me. My mother would look over her shoulder. I would be leaving the door of the house soon. The crowd was the same crowd. And this was the last Istanbul to burn. There was no other Istanbul than this. I knew. (The fire-watching enthusiasts of old Istanbul, the people who rushed to every fire, eventually burned themselves. History was burned.) Everyone was looking at me with interest and curiosity, waiting for me to say something. I stood out from the crowd and took a few steps forward. I slowly took my cap from my head and threw it into the middle of the burning flames.
I turned back. Everyone was looking at me. I was just out the door. I was facing everyone now.
"This is nothing," I said. "I was left behind from the first fire!"
