The belief that the left must urgently grasp the challenge posed by the political environment and the rise of right-wing authoritarian movements/parties, without being trapped in mainstream approaches, forms the basis of this book. At a time when we are witnessing the crisis of neoliberal hegemony, Chantal Mouffe points to the possibility of building a more democratic order as well as the rise and establishment of authoritarian regimes. It calls us to confront the nature of the transformations we have been subjected to over the last three decades and their consequences for democratic politics, in order not to miss the opportunity for radical democratic transformation.

The "consensus at the center" approach, which claims that the opposition of left and right is no longer valid, accelerated the alienation of the masses from the political by regulating politics in a technocratic manner. In Left Populism, Chantal Mouffe identifies why and how left policies are inadequate in the face of this development and proposes to revive a radical struggle for democracy on the basis of an adversarial political understanding, without getting stuck in class essentialism. “Populism is a discursive strategy to build a political boundary. This issue of drawing boundaries is very important. What defines post-politics is the disappearance of the border. It's like 'the difference between left and right is over', which is the typical slogan of the third way approach. In contrast, populism draws the political boundary on the distinction between those below and those above. It's like the people against the establishment.”
